My Big Hair Chop!

My Big Hair Chop

Hi Everyone,

So I recently chopped my hair!!! In case you don’t know, I have been transitioning for the past 16 months. For those of you not aware of what transitioning means – its when you stop using chemicals to straighten your hair but you don’t cut all your off, you leave to grow out. So you’ll be transitioning from the relaxer to your natural hair. The hair strand becomes damaged and you have to continue to apply the relaxer (chemical straightener) every few month to keep your hair sleek straight. Watch my Journey from Relaxed hair to Natural hair video or read the blog post here. Read the rest of this entry

So as I continue to research more on oils and the best ones for your skin that serve multiple purposes, I thought to share with you the benefits of Jojoba oil. I’m sure you’ve heard of jojoba before, but do you know what it is and all the different ways it can be used? This oil is an amazing resource in cold, dry months.

What it is: Jojoba oil “is the oil extracted from the beanlike seeds of the desert shrub Simmondsia chinensis. The female variety of the plant produces a fruit, which in turn bears a seed containing a liquid wax. This oily wax is similar to vegetable oil, and is considered “unusually pure: it contains essentially all-wax esters, Vitamin E, and phospholipids. It also has an incredibly long shelf life; according to the International Jojoba Export Council, properly packaged jojoba oil “can be stored indefinitely without degrading”, so that bottle of yours can last a very long time.

Legend has it that the Native Americans used jojoba oil for a variety of purposes, ranging from hair conditioners, to skin lubricants to even making coffee-like beverages!

Why it’s awesome: Jojoba oil has a few distinct characteristics that make it so wonderful. It’s very similar to sebum–the oil that humans secrete to lubricate skin and hair–and can be used as a sebum substitution for people with decreased production. Conversely, it can also be used to remove excess sebum and product buildup on hair. Jojoba is also a powerful moisturizer, and is sometimes used as a perfume base. It’s antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, hypoallergenic, non-toxic and non-comedogenic. (Big words, I know.)

What is it good for? Pretty much everything. You can use jojoba oil for the following skin and hair care needs:

  • Massage oil
  • After-sun moisturizer
  • Stretch mark treatment
  • Sebum substitute
  • As a way to remove hair product residue
  • Cleanser
  • Treating acne and cold sores
  • Scalp and hair moisturizer
  • Hair detangler

Do you already use jojoba oil? Do you have a favorite product that has jojoba oil in it? Tell me in the comments section below!

My Journey From Relaxed Hair to Natural Hair

In this video I share with you why I decide to transition to natural hair. Natural hair isn’t for everyone but I thought it will be a great experience. I’ve never had natural hair, my hair was relaxed at a very young age and I believe that is because it was easier to manage especially being in boarding school too.
